THE SAND

The sand should be silver, slightly damp, malleable and deep enough to bury most of the items which are available in the room.

Sometimes sand is all children require to make their tray.

WATER

The water is  controlled by the CUSTTAD WORKER.  The reasons are simple. We want THE DRY TRAY to stay dry and we need to avoid the sand in THE BACK UP TRAY and THE BIG TRAY becoming too damp - making it possibly unusable by the worker and child who will be using the room after you.

A rare exception might be when a child expresses a very clear desire to put water into a small container or add water to sand in a container and to deny them that opportunity would be decidedly detrimental to their work and to their creative intentions. 

It is important to have several containers of various sizes and types for water and what we refer to as MUDDY TRAYS. These are trays in which the sand and water have been mixed. There are  a few examples below.
